Copper Pendants That Won't Tarnish and Why I Created them
I have always been a little obsessed with copper.
Copper jewellery, copper lamps, a copper cocktail shaker. I even have a copper toaster. If something exists in copper, there is a reasonable chance I want it.
Unfortunately, copper has one deeply irritating habit. When exposed to air, it tarnishes. The glowing object that once delighted you gradually becomes dark and grubby. Copper jewellery can even leave a green stain on your skin, which is not quite the striking accessory anyone had in mind.
After many disappointments, I searched for copper jewellery that wouldn't tarnish. Some pieces were coated to protect them from the air, but coatings eventually scratch or wear away. The copper is exposed to oxygen again and the tarnishing begins.
What I wanted did not appear to exist, so I decided to invent it.
After many failed experiments, I had my eureka moment. I sealed the copper but then added a crucial second stage: I trapped the copper between a glass dome and a hypoallergenic stainless steel base to protect it from the outside world. This way, its colours and markings remain as they were on the day I made it.
The result is unique copper art jewellery, handmade in the UK from genuine copper that is transformed by verdigris, flame and carefully controlled chemical alchemy. Each tiny original artwork becomes a handmade copper pendant presented on a stainless steel snake-style chain.
No polishing. No tarnishing. No green skin with this jewellery. Just a tiny work of original art fashioned between yours truly and Mother Nature. Or Mother Science, if there is such a woman.
Nobody else seemed to be making the non-tarnishing copper jewellery I wanted to wear.
Now I am.
