The Copperologist displaying unique copper pendant necklaces handmade in the UK and sealed beneath glass so they won’t tarnish

Individually unique
copper pendant necklaces

I’m a professional artist represented by Burford Art Gallery and a fourth-generation copper maker. Each pendant begins with genuine copper, transformed through flame and verdigris into colours and markings that can never be recreated.

When a piece reaches its moment of perfection, I seal it with a protective anti-tarnish coating and enclose it beneath glass in a hypoallergenic stainless-steel setting. This double-sealing process protects the copper from the air that causes tarnishing.

A distinctive copper anniversary gift, a special birthday present or simply an original artwork chosen for yourself.

A COPPEROLOGIST’S FIELD NOTE

WHY I HAD TO INVENT MY OWN COPPER JEWELLERY

Creating non-tarnishing copper pendants.

1

COPPER JEWELLERY GRAVEYARD

The Copperologist looking through a drawer of tarnished copper jewellery

I love copper jewellery.
But it always disappointed me.

A piece would look beautiful when I bought it, but within days or weeks it was tarnished, dirty and unwearable.

They all ended up tossed in the back of a drawer.

My copper jewellery graveyard.

2

SURELY SOMEONE HAS SOLVED THIS?

The Copperologist searching for copper jewellery that will not tarnish

I searched for copper jewellery that won’t tarnish. I couldn't find anything with lasting protection from air and skin oils.

Some jewellers protect copper with coatings, a bit like clear nail varnish. But coatings wear away.

Then you’re back to the start.

Tarnished. Dirty. Back of drawer.

Well, that’s not good enough.

3

FINE. I’LL INVENT IT MYSELF.

The Copperologist experimenting to invent non-tarnishing copper jewellery

I experimented with flame, verdigris and secret alchemical reactions and produced stunning blues, greens, reds and golds. That was the fun part. But, alas, they tarnished in time.

The challenge was making that extraordinary moment stay pristine.

But how do you stop time?

4

A YEAR of experimentation and exasperation LATER…

The breakthrough non-tarnishing copper art pendant

Instead of trying to change copper's character, the answer was to isolate the finished artwork from the air and chemicals that cause copper to tarnish. I sealed it chemically and then sealed it again by placing it between a glass dome and stainless steel. And... Eureka!

  • The colours stay.
  • The verdigris stays.
  • No tarnish to ruin it!

A moment of perfection
trapped in time!

PENDANTS MEET PUBLIC

The founding collectors discovering The Copperologist's pendants at Oxfordshire Art Weeks

Oxfordshire Art Weeks 2026.

I finally put my copper pendants in front of actual humans for feedback.

They bought them.
They wore them.
They loved them!

They came back and told me how many compliments they’d received. Some bought more than one!

And, one year on since my first experimental pendants were created, they still look just as exquisite as the day they were made!

Non-tarnish copper pendants had become a reality!

A FEW THINGS YOU MAY WONDER

WILL THEY REALLY NEVER TARNISH?
All copper tarnishes when exposed to air. Each Copperologist pendant is first given a protective seal, then enclosed between a glass dome and a stainless-steel setting, thereby creating a double seal to protect it from the air and chemicals that would cause it to tarnish and change. The earliest Copperologist copper pendant necklaces have now been worn for more than a year with not even a hint of tarnish. Provided the setting remains intact and the pendant is kept dry, there is every reason to expect it to stay that way for a long time. I haven't found anyone else doing this double seal technique. After a year of real-world wear and tear, I think we can safely say that the copper has been convincingly tamed.
WILL COPPER TOUCH MY SKIN?
No. The copper artwork is enclosed beneath a glass dome in a hypoallergenic stainless steel setting and supplied on a stainless steel chain. All the beauty of copper, without copper touching your skin. No green stains for you!
IS EVERY PENDANT REALLY UNIQUE?
Yes. The alchemical reactions and artist interventions that create the colours and markings develop differently each time. I couldn't exactly recreate them if I tried! Your pendant is the only version of it in existence. You will never turn up at a party and find someone wearing the exact same necklace.
WHY £165–£185?
Each necklace is an original miniature copper artwork, created by hand by The Copperologist. Developing verdigris and other alchemical reactions can take weeks or months before the exact moment is reached for the process to stop. Each piece of copper is then trapped between a glass dome and a stainless steel setting. It is then presented its own velvet-lined wooden collector's drawer with name, collector's provenance card and stainless steel snake chain. My necklaces are made to be cherished for years, not left tarnishing in the back of a drawer after a month.
WHAT IF I CHANGE MY MIND?
I want you to be delighted with your jewellery. If you change your mind, you have 14 days to request a return. Simply send your necklace back unworn, in its original condition with its collector's drawer, card and presentation materials. Full details can be found in the Returns Policy (in the Footer). But returned necklaces must be unworn. The Copperologist has certain methods of testing this, which are best left shrouded in mystery.

FOUR GENERATIONS OF COPPER MAKERS

Three generations of my family worked in Swansea’s copper furnaces, when the city was known as Copperopolis, the copper capital of the world.

As the fourth generation, I continue that family connection by transforming genuine copper into unique copper art pendant necklaces that don't tarnish.
